MakerSpace First Friday

January 6

Interested in starting the New Year with a new experience or project? Then check out the MakerSpace presented by Raytheon at Sci-Tech Discovery Center in Frisco.

The MakerSpace gives tinkerers, inventors and budding hobbyists the chance to build almost anything they can imagine. Veterans and their families have exclusive access to the MakerSpace on the first Friday of each month as part of a program called First Fridays.

“The goal of First Fridays is to provide veterans and military families with an opportunity to explore their ingenuity and the tools available to build almost anything they can imagine. It can also be the first steps in a New Year to launching a hobby or career by doing something creative and challenging,” said Kim Parks, community relations manager at Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems.

The MakerSpace is equipped with a 3D-printer, robotics kits, a full-spectrum laser cutter and advanced woodworking tools – a proverbial “candy store” for the do-it-yourself crowd.

Veterans and military participants in First Fridays must present their military I.D. for access to the MakerSpace. Children over 10 years old are also welcome.

Additionally, members of Raytheon’s RAYVETS employee veteran resource group and other veterans’ service organizations are on-hand for mentoring and to help veterans and families alike develop skills needed to succeed in the civilian workforce.
