  • Plano Counselors resign (Why)?

Three counselors from Haggard Middle School in Plano suddenly resigned on Feb. 7 and have now filed grievances with the Plano school district. No one will give parents or media any explanation. Anyone have an inside connection over there that could shed some light on this? Curious now that they are all being so tight lipped. The counselors are on paid leave until contract expires later this summer. Weird that all three would voluntary leave at the same time. Things that make you go Hmmmmm?

If they resigned, why are they being paid? Sounds like an early vacation to me!

I am not a fan of people being paid for nothing....

District: Resigning Haggard Middle School counselors filed grievance

By Conner Hammett, chammett@starlocalnews.com, @ConnerHammett on Twitter

Published: Friday, February 15, 2013 3:53 PM CST

The three Haggard Middle School counselors whose collective resignations surprised parents two weeks ago filed grievances with Plano ISD, the district said Friday.

Counselors Penny Hale, Robin Taylor and Mary White resigned Feb. 1.

Hale and White's resignation letters state they will no longer be with the district effective the end of the fall 2013 semester, while Taylor's gives the last day of the 2012-13 school year as her effective resignation date.

All three counselors will be on paid personal leave until their resignations are effective, said Karla Oliver, assistant superintendent for government, community and planning initiatives. The district is working with its legal department to determine what information regarding the resignations may be releasable under the open records act, and some information may be released as early as next week, she said.

Meanwhile, parents are still speculating as to why the counselors resigned.

On Feb. 8, the Haggard PTA Board met with administrators to discuss the matter. The PTA has not specified which administrators the board spoke with, and the meeting was reportedly closed to parents and non-board PTA members.

A statement from PTA President Brandi Hatley sent to parents Monday did not detail what was discussed at the meeting and echoed many statements already made by Plano ISD regarding the matter, adding that any "opinions and comments" should be directed to Plano ISD administration.

The statement also addressed the temporary shutdown of the Haggard Middle School PTA "Eagle's Nest" Facebook page, which was taken down Feb. 8 and put back on the web -- minus all posts and comments related to the resignations other than Hatley's statement -- Thursday.

"The PTA is a noncommercial, nonsectarian, nonpartisan association, and according to the official PTA guidelines, the Haggard Middle School PTA's social media outlets are to provide accurate, relevant and up-to-date information," the statement reads. "They are not the appropriate place to express complaints and grievances."

In a letter sent Feb. 7 to the PTA, Associate Superintendent of District Services Cathy Galloway spoke in general terms about Plano ISD's grievance process, stating that structured policies are required by law in the event of a grievance filing.

"It is important to me and my Plano ISD colleagues that parents understand that despite emotional connections in any circumstance, the district is held accountable for this standard of privacy on behalf of all employees," the letter reads. "In the grievance process, internal or external legal counsel or other resources may be engaged to ensure unbiased findings."

Meanwhile, on a Haggard Facebook page operated independently of the PTA, parents are discussing the possibility of launching a petition demanding the district provide an explanation for the sudden resignations.

Hatley did not respond to requests for comment.

All searches turn up articles such as this one with no details on why...which makes me all the more curious....it is odd that they resigned yet are still getting paid.

Short of anything that would lead to child endangerment charges (not necessarily against the councelors, but against anyone in the district), I'm not sure what, or why it would be any of our business they resigned.
If you're addicted to cold turkey how do you stop?
I reject your reality and substitute my own.

They effectively gave their notice (90+ days in all the instances) and it appears have since been put on paid leave by the district.

From the article linked by FriscoGayParent:
"Hale and White's resignation letters state they will no longer be with the district effective the end of the fall 2013 semester, while Taylor's gives the last day of the 2012-13 school year as her effective resignation date."

It would be the public's business (mainly the parents of any students from there) because most likely if all 3 resigned and filed complaints with the school, something is obviously wrong and that something could effect the students. If the counselors resigned because they were asked to do (or saw) something they weren't comfortable with regarding the principal or any other staff member, that would be something parents would need to know. Were they working in an environment they considered to be full of sexual harassment? Were they asked to fudge TAKS test scores? Who know, but something is up and it probably ain't good.

Also, I work in the education field, and this is highly irregular.

Purely speculation - and FOL hates speculation, but when I worked in a law office we saw lots of school counselors, diagnosticians and LSSP's who had been asked to do things that violate their code of ethics. (The law office specialized in Special Education Law so it involved special education.) All too often it envolved denying a child's disability or something similar so the school district could save money. Most educators are in the field because they love children and being asked to compromise on what a child needs to satisfy an administrator does not always sit right.

More and more specialist are being asked to do things that are not in their job description and more along the lines of adminstravie types of duties.

I would think the resignations have something to do with being asked to participate in something that they believed was morally wrong.

                  Just a guess.

I can tell you everything....it involves my 14 yr old daughter that ran away from home to be be a 20 yr old man. My child and the boy’s criminal mother went to a social worker at DFPS and asked for her help to be adopted by the boy’s Mother. The social worker instructed my daughter to call the abuse intake hotline to create a reason to be remove from my home. Although I reported my child missing to Plano Police on 3 different occasions after my daughter stole my car with the perpetrator, The Plano Police offered me no assistance finding my daughter because they too, were helping my daughter with her plan. After 3 days of searching for my child I received a note on my door that my daughter was in CPS care because she was a runaway. My daughter was withdrawn from her school on the same day and placed into a homeless shelter. A couple days later I receive a citation from the OAG office instructing me to come to court in order to assist me in enforcing child support on her father. I was not on welfare and never asked for assistance from their office. After taking a closer look at the acknowledgement of paternity, it was disturbing that my daughter’s information was changed on the form. That case ended in a non-suit. I was never allowed to see or speak to my daughter again and never received any information about what had happened. Luckily, when my daughter ran away she threw her phone out the window and It was returned to me by a neighbor who heard it ringing. I could see all of her plans and communications she had made with Cps and How they planned the whole situation. The guardian ad Litem assigned to my child’s case even reported to the judge that my daughter was lying and the Cps social worker helped my child run away to be with a sexual predator. She was fired from the case and had no control over the situation. I have received pictures online of the Judge’s Arms around my child and videos that they used my daughter to further their political agenda. They changed my daughter’s name and and even had major surgery on her After finally receiving all of the documents from the court case I was never a part of, without ever telling me anything. I have all the documents proving this and ready to show them to anyone interested.
