I agree....thought it to be a memorial more respectful of the losses rather than a community rally...and somber moment. All the cheering and glee, yes glee was very weird an inappropiate given the losses...in my opinion

Somehow it turned into a pep rally...these people have no limits on how bad a taste they can do things in.

I thought it was more of a pep rally too but it seemed that all directly involved were ok with it and that's all that really matters.

As for Obamas call for greater civility.....I for one would welcome this but......

To quote Obama...it was "just words". The speech was....well...a speech. "Just words."

How bout actions? How bout leading by example? As the leader of the Dem party he would have been FAR more effective... when all the left finger pointing started... when the blame game started... if Obama spoke up at that time. All he needed to do was make a statement that the best politics is no politics when such incidents occur. He needs to lead by example...not just spout words.

Yes, the civility in our political arena must improve or I do fear greater violence in our future, not that political rhetoric contributed to this incident. But if this president now sees the danger of the rhetoric, he needs to start with his own words and conduct....as he has been the most divisive president in my lifetime.

You cannot lead the horse to water then tell him not to drink.

But, as CIC, he chose to stand on the sidelines and watch all of this unfold.

When people are in a sadden state and shock they tend to get together and rally. It was a way of showing that they agreed with what was being said. I am sure if you were in that room you too would have been clapping if you really tell yourself the truth. I am sure that none of these people meant any disrespect to those that suffered loss or were hurt. In the audience there was those that were shot and or had suffered a great loss. It is easy to make comments about a situation when you were not part of it and standing on the outside. Maybe Obama did have an agenda (I am not a fan myself) but he did encourage those that needed it there. It was to whoever said "Obama doesn't miss this kind if opportunity" after the crowd was discussed, I wasn't pointing you out I'm sorry it seemed that way.

But yes, it was not as memorable as Ok City or Bush with 9/11. But it didn't have to be. He honored the victims and their families. Honored Giffords and the city of Tucson. He did great when he said we can't point our fingers at people. He spoke as a father in the last 15 mins and I really enjoyed that.

When he said Gabby opened her eyes I think the whole country cheered.
