January 5, 2013; Noon

FC Dallas Stadium, Frisco, Texas

The 2012 NCAA Division I Football Championship Game will be played Saturday, January 5, 2013, at noon, Central, at FC Dallas Stadium in Frisco, Texas. The game, which concludes a 20-team national playoff, is hosted by the Southland Conference, the City of Frisco and Hunt Sports Group. Last year, North Dakota State beat Sam Houston State 17-6 in front of a sell-out crowd in excess of 20,000 fans. In the 2011 game, Eastern Washington came from behind for a 20-19 win in the first college football game played at FC Dallas Stadium.

Opening Round Produced Three First-Time Playoff Winners

Out of the four first-round games played last Saturday, three produced first-time winners. South Dakota State, Coastal Carolina and Wagner all claimed their first wins in the NCAA Division I playoffs. South Dakota State is making its second playoff appearance this year, while Coastal Carolina is in the field for a third time. Wagner reached the playoffs for the first time in school history. The Jackrabbits, who beat Eastern Illinois 58-10 last Saturday, had lost at Montana in their first tournament appearance in 2009. Coastal Carolina earned its first playoff victory by beating Bethune-Cookman 24-14. The Chanticleers lost opening-round games to Appalachian State in 2006 and to Western Illinois in 2010. Wagner beat Colgate 31-20 in the school’s first-ever playoff game. In the other opening round game, Stony Brook beat Villanova 20-10. The Seawolves made their postseason debut last year and opened with a 31-28 triumph over Albany before facing Sam Houston State in the second round.

Sweet 16

The NCAA Division I Football Championship is down to 16 teams. The top-four national seeds will play host to the winners of the four opening-round games this Saturday. No. 1 seed North Dakota State meets South Dakota State. No. 2 Eastern Washington will host Wagner. No. 3 Montana State welcomes Stony Brook to Bozeman and No. 4 seed Old Dominion plays host to Coastal Carolina. The Big Sky, Missouri Valley Football conferences each have three times playing in the second round to account for more than half of the field. The Big South and Southland conferences along with the Colonial Athletic Association have two teams each, while the Northeast Conference is represented by Wagner. All eight second-round games will be available on ESPN3 and for subscribers on ESPN Game Plan.

Frisco Mayer Maher Maso Fills Out Playoff Bracket

The honorable mayor of Frisco Maher Maso filled out his NCAA Division I Football Championship bracket this past Monday with the benefit of having the first-round games already in the books. He picked two Southland Conference teams among his final four teams who will meet in the national semifinals Dec. 14-15 for the right to advance to Frisco and play for the national championship. He also picked a rematch of last year’s title game, but you’ll have to watch the video to see who he picked to win it all at FC Dallas Stadium on Jan. 5.

A Look at the Remaining Teams

All but one of the 16 teams in the second round of the Division I playoffs have played in the playoffs previously. The lone exception is Wagner, who made its debut last week with a 31-20 victory over Colgate. Appalachian State is making its 20th appearance in the playoffs this season. Only Montana, with 21 playoff berths, has more. Georgia Southern is making its 19th playoff appearance and leads all teams with 43 postseason victories. Among the others in the field, only one has appeared in the playoffs more than 10 times and that is New Hampshire, which is making its 11th trip to the postseason. Of the 15 second-round teams to have made a playoff appearance previously, 10 were in the field last year and the longest drought for the other five teams belongs to Illinois State, which had not been in the playoffs since 2006. Five of the second round teams have won 12 national titles, led by Georgia Southern, which has claimed six titles in its history (1985, 1986, 1989, 1990, 1999 and 2000). Appalachian State won three consecutive titles from 2005-07. North Dakota State (2011), Eastern Washington (2010) and Montana State (1984) also have won titles.

NCAA.com Weekly Notebook

For more about the Division I Football Championship, don’t miss this week’s NCAA.com notebook compiled by Mark Bedics, the NCAA media coordinator for this year’s championship.

All-Time NCAA Division I National Champions

Appalachian State (3 championships), Boise State, Delaware, Eastern Kentucky (2), Eastern Washington, Florida A&M, Furman, Georgia Southern (6), Idaho State, James Madison, Louisiana-Monroe, Massachusetts, Marshall (2), Montana (2), Montana State, North Dakota State, Richmond, Southern Illinois, Western Kentucky, Villanova, and Youngstown State (4).

FCS History

The 2013 NCAA Division I Football Championship Game will be the 35th edition. The first championship took place in 1978 when Florida A&M beat Massachusetts 35-28 in Wichita Falls, Texas. Chattanooga, Tenn., has hosted the championship game more than any other city with 13 games between 1997-2009. The FCS was formerly named Division I-AA from 1978-2005. Since the NCAA does not sponsor a championship for the FBS, the tournament to determine the FCS winner was changed to be called the Division I Football Championship in 2006. Georgia Southern has won the most championships with six.

Tailgate Town Opens at 9 a.m. on Game Day

Where’s the best place to get ready for the NCAA Division I Football Championship game? It is just outside of FC Dallas Stadium in Tailgate Town! This fun-filled, interactive area allows fans of any age a chance to experience the thrills, excitement and spirit of college football. Whether you try your hand at quarterback, ride the mechanical bull, cheer on your favorite team’s band and cheerleaders, or just kick back with some of Frisco’s best food and drink… this is the place to be before the big game! Admission is FREE. Tailgate Town opens at 9 a.m. on game day, Saturday, Jan. 5.

Road to the Championship

There are 122 teams within 13 conferences competing in FCS football. The championship bracket consists of 20 teams, 10 of which are selected via automatic qualification. The remaining at-large teams are selected by the Division I Football Championship Committee, assisted by four regional advisory committees that serve in an advisory capacity only. At-large selections are based on multiple factors including overall record and strength of schedule. The championship bracket consists of 20 teams, 10 of which are selected via automatic qualification. The championship is conducted via single elimination format. All preliminary-round games (first round, second round, quarterfinals and semifinals) are hosted on campus sites. Sites are selected and announced during the selection show and as teams advance throughout the championship. The championship game is hosted at FC Dallas Stadium in Frisco, Texas. In 2013 the championship bracket will expand from 20 to 24 teams, increasing the number of AQ conferences from 10 to 11. The remaining teams will be selected on an at-large basis. The top-eight teams in the bracket will be seeded and receive first-round byes.
