Frisco, Texas – Ken Johnson is a ground commander who’s covered many miles.  With 101 marathons under his belt, he’s returning to Frisco for the second year from Huntsville, Texas to #RunBigStar.

Johnson served with the 101st Airborne Division during the Vietnam War and will add to his goal of accomplishing 101 half marathons by running The Texas Big Star, his 90th half marathon race.  After 101 has been completed in both races, mission will be accomplished. Johnson’s level of commitment is one for the history books, and we’re honored to feature him in our series.

Who do you run for?

Myself and my family.  I run for my health.  This provides for a better lifestyle and support of my family.

What does running do for you?

Obviously, running helps me stay healthy and live a more enjoyable life.  I have only missed 18 days of running since 1997 (14 for appendicitis in 2002 and four for a knee issue in 2009).  So, I have not missed a day in over seven years.

Why will you run the Texas Big Star in Frisco April 2017?

I have family in the Dallas area, so I have a place to stay.  And, I enjoyed the race last year.

Why should others #RunBigStar?

It is a well-managed race, with great community support.  Also, the post-race party was super.

What has been your greatest running achievement?

Hopefully, my persistence in the sport of running has had a positive influence on my family and others.  I have written a column on running for the Huntsville Item for the last 10 years and have had an excellent platform to promote the sport in the community.

If you could not run, what would you do instead?

Probably hike.

Closing thoughts?

My wife, Marilynn, and I have six children and will celebrate our 50th anniversary on October 28, 2017.
Ken has participated in 101 marathons, including twenty-two 50k’s and one 50-miler (71 of the 101 marathons were after reaching age 66).  He has participated in 89 half marathons and is working toward a goal of 101.  The Texas Big Star will be his 90th half marathon.  Johnson’s total number of races through 2016 is 928.  Come out to cheer Ken on!
