The Wakeland High School boys’ soccer team won the UIL class 5A state soccer championship on Saturday, April 15 at Birkelbach Field in Georgetown.

The Wolverines defeated the Waller High School Bulldogs by a score of 2-0 in the championship game, securing their second state soccer championship in school history.

After a scoreless first half, the Wolverines got on the board in the 62nd minute with a goal by midfielder Manny Diaz DeLeon. Championship game MVP forward Cody Sedatole followed with a goal of his own in the 70th minute that put the game out of reach. Goalkeepers Noah Samadian and Brady Smith combined to shutout the Bulldogs.

The team advanced to the state title game after defeating Wichita Falls 6-0 in the semifinals on Thursday. Wakeland was led in that game by two goals from Jacob Miller. Sedatole, Alex Wing and Theo Martey each added a goal as the Wolverines raced out to a 3-0 halftime lead and never looked back.

Saturday’s championship capped off a remarkable playoff run in which Wakeland scored 26 goals and allowed only two over the course of seven games.

“I was very proud of the guys this season and their effort,” said Wakeland Head Coach Andy Holt. “It is a great group of kids that worked extremely hard to win a state title for the Wakeland Wolverines.”

Wakeland was the state runner-up in 2016, bronze medal winner in 2014 and state champion in 2010.

Congratulations to Coach Andy Holt and the entire Wakeland boys’ soccer team for their incredible season and for bringing another state title home to Frisco!

The team will be honored by FC Dallas at Toyota Stadium on Saturday, April 29 during the professional team’s match versus the Portland Timbers. Students will be recognized at halftime and will get the opportunity to “scarf” the Lamar Hunt statue beforehand, a coveted honor.
