Frisco Independent School District has been honored for its outstanding commitment to music education by a national non-profit organization.
Frisco ISD is one of four percent of districts across the country designated by The NAMM Foundation as one of the Best Communities for Music Education in 2017. FISD was also a winner of this prestigious award in 2016 and 2013.
The Best Communities Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students.
To qualify for the Best Communities designation, Frisco ISD answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program and community music-making programs. Responses were verified with school officials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas.
“This is a tremendous honor that recognizes the work that staff members do each and every day,” said Assistant Fine Arts Director Preston Hazzard. “The rigorous selection process takes into account music education from all angles – not just what is being done in the classroom, but how it is accomplished and, more importantly, why strong support exists. We are fortunate to live in a community that recognizes the importance of music to a well-rounded education and the value it brings to each and every child.”
Research shows music education plays a vital role in students’ overall success. It has been shown to provide a number of educational, cognitive and social benefits, with links to higher high school graduation rates and college attendance.
In addition, studies show music education lays the foundation for individual excellence in group settings, creative problem solving and flexibility in work situations, as well learning how to give and receive constructive criticism to excel.
The NAMM Foundation is a national nonprofit whose mission is to advance active participation in music making across the lifespan by supporting scientific research, philanthropic giving and public service programs.
