Liberty Girls’ Team Wins State Championship in Cross Country

In School News by admin

The girls’ cross country team from Liberty High School was crowned 5A state champions over the weekend, the first-ever team state title for the school.

It was also the first girls’ cross country state championship for Frisco ISD since former Superintendent and Coach Dr. Rick Reedy led Frisco High School to the girls’ title in 1982.

Liberty senior Carrie Fish led the way for the Redhawks and FISD, finishing second in the girls’ race. Her teammate, sophomore Amelia Jauregui, took seventh place.

The championship was truly a team effort – with runners Kallin Brown, Kelsey Holden, Gabriela Leyva-Montiel, Kira Robinson and Kaylen Ruiz helping the team get to the top of the podium. They qualified for state after a fourth place finish at regionals.

In all, Frisco ISD sent 26 runners to compete in the Cross Country State Championships, held Saturday in Round Rock.

In addition to the state-champion team from Liberty, the girls’ and boys’ teams from Wakeland High School also advanced to state and finished fourth and eighth, respectively.

The top boys’ finisher was Wakeland junior Nick Hendrix, who placed fifth overall.

Reedy High School freshman Colleen Stegmann also finished in the top ten, placing ninth in the girls’ race.

Congratulations to all the FISD runners who advanced to state:
